Religious Education

Religious Education is one of the core subjects at the College, alongside English, Maths, and Science. Students enjoy RE lessons and come to a deeper knowledge, understanding, and love of the Word of God as revealed in Scriptures and the teaching of the Church. Students are taught skills that allow them to engage thoughtfully with different worldviews, reflect on their own beliefs and uphold Catholic Social Teaching.

Religious Education Big Ideas

Students are given the opportunity to reflect on their own lives and the big decisions that they are facing. We aim to ensure all students are challenged to learn about and learn from Catholic Christianity through a lively and thorough analysis of the effects of the Roman Catholic tradition on different aspects of Christian lifestyle and practice. The GCSE specification at Key Stage 4 and the schemes of work at KS3 conform to the requirements laid down by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

Key Stage 3 Religious Education

RE is compulsory for all Key Stage 3 students and they receive six lessons over a fortnight. Students follow the Curriculum Directory as laid down by the Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales. This is a challenging program of study as students discover a new way of thinking and learning in Religious Education. They will have to think in a deeper way and look for meanings that are not immediately obvious. They will explore the Church as the ‘People of God’ and the ‘Body of Jesus Christ’ and understand why God calls all people to Himself and how to live out our lives following the teachings of ‘Love of Neighbour’.

Homework consists of varied weekly tasks that support what they are learning in each unit.

Key Stage 4 Religious Education

As a Catholic school, GCSE RE is compulsory for all. Students will be studying for the Edexcel Specification A - Catholic Christianity. In addition to this, students will study a second faith, Judaism, in-depth, as well as exploring a range of philosophical and ethical issues. This course consists of three papers which will be examined in the summer of Year 11.

Enrichment and Extracurricular

The R.E. department offers a variety activities that allow students to experience the subject in the real world and put into practice Catholic Social Teaching. We take pride in collaborating with departments across the curriculum, such as P.E., Art, Geography and History, to show students how their faith touches every aspect of society and their lives.

Students have the opportunity to be part of the Student Spirituality Team, where they take a lead role in the spiritual life of the school, assisting with liturgies, charity work, and leading student and staff prayers.

All students have the opportunity to explore their faith through engaging events such as retreats, school events such as Fairtrade Fortnight and Flame.
