Physical Education

Physical Education at Bonus Pastor looks to provide and promote a love for physical exercise and sport. This is through delivering a competitive and high performing environment, providing opportunities for pupils to excel. However, also delivering a spiral curriculum that underpins students with physical and theoretical knowledge that can be applied beyond the borders of education. In addition to this, a rich, varied extra-curricular program enhances physical ability by replicating an elite sporting environment as well as producing a love for physical activity.

Our values underpin the entirety of our curriculum, both theoretically and practically:

  • Resilience;
  • Empathy;
  • Self Motivators.

Physical Education Big Ideas

We, as a department, believe that these are the key values throughout sport and life which allow pupils to succeed both in sport but also within whatever career path they choose to follow. Values take precedent throughout lessons, over physical ability, as we understand the importance of creating life-long learners in Physical Education.

Key Stage 3 Physical Education

Our KS3 Curriculum is assessed evenly through both theoretical and practical knowledge. Each half term, groups will rotate around the various sports being given a large range of sporting variety. Pupils will be assessed as below.

Practical

You will be assessed via the information below within each sport on your ability to perform skills and tactics efficiently in each sport.

Theory

You will be assessed biweekly through a google form of your theoretical knowledge based on the knowledge organiser and the knowledge gained from applying this within your practical PE lessons.

Key Stage 4 Physical Education

We offer two examination pathways in PE, The AQA GCSE PE and the Pearson BTEC tech in Sport. We have pathways that allow all of our students to undertake a course that values their strengths and helps them move towards their next stage of learning, be it an A-Level course or a more vocational BTEC course.

In KS4, you will also have one core PE lesson every two weeks. At KS4, there is greater ownership on pupils choosing what pathway they want to participate in, highlighted below.

High Performance - This group is for those pupils who thrive in a competitive environment. They enjoy sport and want to push themselves to be their absolute best. There are groups for both girls and boys, participating in a range of various sports. Greater ownership is on pupils, allowing them to lead themselves and peers through warm ups and competitive games.

Sports Leaders - This group is for pupils who have a love for physical activity and exercise, but not necessarily in a competitive environment. This pathway looks to build on existing leadership skills and increase knowledge, experience and confidence in leading.

Girls' Only Group - This group is aimed for girls who have lost a love for sport, physical activity and exercise. To regain confidence and a genuine enjoyment for physical activity. This is through exploring a variety of different activities than typically taught through the KS3 curriculum.

Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities

The PE department runs activities after school every night of the week apart from Mondays, which are for school meetings. The clubs that students can take part are varied and change according to the term and also what upcoming competitions the school are preparing for.  These are provided at no cost to parents. Please see the Extra-Curricular timetable for more details.

Challenge and Reward trips are also run throughout the year to reward those pupils who are making excellent progress and to challenge their understanding further, with previous visits including, Wembley Stadium, Twickenham Stadium, Lord’s Cricket Ground, Copper Box Arena.

Competitions are also run throughout Year 7 to Year 11 to stretch and challenge students with the college taking part in National and Local competitions in a variety of different sports. The department also runs weekly after school intervention for Year 11 students each Thursday after school, alongside additional holiday interventions throughout the year.
